Kindle on iPhone

by Dan Strom on March 4, 2009

I just downloaded Kindle for iPhone and purchased the book The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch for testing. I’ve got to say that it is pretty cool.

These are my first impressions…

  • The Kindle for iPhone app is free in the App Store. The download was quick.
  • Upon first start of the app, you are asked for your Amazon login information. I have already purchased way too many books, so I could easily remember my login info.
  • I wasn’t sure how Amazon on the web interacted with Kindle on the iPhone. So, I purchased the Kindle edition of The Last Lecture. On the web page I could specify to deliver to my iPhone. This leads me to believe that when I registered Kindle on the iPhone app, that my phone number was sent to Amazon.
  • When the purchase was complete, I went back to the iPhone and started the Kindle app. I noticed that the spinning data transfer indicator was spinning. When it stopped, The Last Lecture was in my list of books on Kindle for iPhone. Wow!
  • I’ve just found a way to spend money almost at the speed of light!

Now, on to the reading experience….

  • Turning pages is as simple as sliding my finger across the screen. This looks much like the Stanza reader turning pages, but doesn’t have the page turn effect like Classics Bookshelf.
  • Tap the screen, while reading a book, and some other functions are made visible.
  • Font size is easily adjustable by tapping the font button.
  • There is a slider across the bottom for quickly moving to a location in the book.
  • Hitting the + icon adds a bookmark.
  • The Open Book icon is used to Go To chapters or user-defined bookmarks.

That’s it for my first impressions. I look forward to using this more.

There are features for people who also own the actual Kindle device. I don’t, so I won’t list those.
